Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt is the focal point and inspiration for research to improve the health of children in our region and around the world. The efforts by our doctors and surgeons to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent the most devastating childhood diseases lead to new interventions that benefit countless lives.
Children's Hospital serves as the center for child health education at Vanderbilt. We are developing investigators that will lead discovery for future generations.
Faculty in the Department of Pediatrics and related pediatric divisions of surgery, radiology, and neurology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine have active research programs in birth defects, vaccine development, prevention of traumatic injuries, cancer, diabetes, and prevention of preterm birth and adverse outcomes of prematurity among other areas.
The Department of Pediatrics in the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine ranks No. 6 in the nation for pediatric research grants. The National Institutes of Health reports the Department received grants totaling more than in 2008.
