The Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt and The Shalom Foundation have agreed to work together to improve the lives of children in Guatemala through better health care by facilitating and creating sustainable programs to provide health care services and to educate the community on how to better care for themselves. To accomplish this mission the Children's Hospital and The Shalom Foundation will work together to:

There is also a very high ratio of children to adults as a result of the country's 36-year civil war which ended in 1996. The war resulted in deaths of 100,000 people and one million refugees.
