Asthma is a chronic lung condition that causes inflammation of the airways (breathing tubes). Inflammation means the airways are swollen and produce mucus. In a person with asthma, the airways are extra sensitive to certain asthma triggers. These triggers can cause an asthma flare-up where the muscles around the airways tighten up, making them narrower. The swelling, mucus and tightness of the airways makes it hard for air to move in and out and causes symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Learn more on our asthma overview page.
If your child is diagnosed with asthma, it is very important to learn all about how to manage this condition so that your child can be healthy, play actively, and have good school attendance.
