Sickle Cell Anemia and Hemoglobinopathy Program

Sickle Cell PatientsThe Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology has a comprehensive Sickle Cell Anemia and Hemoglobinopathy program, treating patients with all forms of sickle cell disease, thalassemias, and other hemoglobinopathies. Vanderbilt is a referral center for children with hemoglobin disorders from all counties in Middle Tennessee.

Our program consists of medical treatment, health maintenance, and patient education. We work with multiple disciplines at Vanderbilt in the care of our patients, including social service, psychology, pulmonary medicine, cardiology, ophthalmology, radiology, orthopedic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, as well as the bone marrow transplantation team.

Our Clinics

Infant/Toddler Clinic
This clinic is for newborn infants to children three years of age, many of whom were identified through the State newborn screening program. Emphasis is placed on parent education and issues about young children. The clinic offers a support group for parents, led by a sickle cell outreach nurse and a social worker.

School Age Clinic 
Children ages four through 15 are seen in this clinic. In addition to medical care, ongoing age-appropriate teaching and social service support is provided to patients and parents, with attention to disease-related school issues.

Transition Clinic
This clinic is designed for patients age 16 and older. The Transition Clinic includes a structured curriculum and offers services by a hematologist, an adolescent medicine physician, a sickle cell nurse specialist, social workers, a vocational counselor, and a genetic counselor from Meharry Medical College. Teens are encouraged to gain independence in their own health care and are prepared for smooth transition to the Vanderbilt Adult Sickle Cell Clinic.
