Sports Medicine Clinic

The Sports Medicine Clinic at Children's Hospital provides care for active people or for those who wish to become active. Care is provided for both the competitive athlete of all skill levels and expertise as well as the non-athlete with an injury or musculoskeletal problem. Our goal is to promote fitness and wellness, encourage prevention of injury and illness, maximize function and minimize time away from sports/work/school.

Our pediatric specialist has additional training in musculoskeletal medicine and sports conditions.

We  specialize in non-operative treatment (medicine, physical therapy, braces, training habits) of sports injuries. Ninety percent of all sports injuries are non-surgical; however, we can expedite a referral to an appropriate orthopedic surgeon if surgery is required.

Common problems treated include:

  • acute injuries (such as ankle sprains, muscle strains, knee and shoulder injuries, and fractures)
  • overuse injuries (such as tendonitis, stress fractures)
  • concussions
  • sports performance issues (nutrition, supplements)
  • injury prevention
  • exercise prescription for those who want to increase their fitness level (athlete and non-athlete)
  • strength training and conditioning
  • return to play decisions in sick or injured athletes
  • healthy lifestyle promotion
  • preparticipation physical examinations (sports physicals)
  • injury assessment and management
  • care of sports-related injuries
  • general medical needs of athletes
  • coordination of care between other members of health care and sports medicine teams (primary care physician, other specialists, nurses, athletic trainers, physical therapists, coaches, schools, families, etc)

Beneficial effects of exercise include:

  • reduction in risk of premature death due to all causes
  • reduction in risk of cardiac death
  • reduction in risk of development of diabetes
  • reduction in risk of development of high blood pressure
  • reduction in risk of development of colon cancer
  • reduction of pre-established high blood pressure
  • reduction of subjective depression or anxiety
  • improvement in measures of obesity
