Education and Training for Professionals

The Division of Critical Care Medicine offers an ACGME accredited three-year program for pediatricians. The program focuses on acquiring and refining expertise in managing critically ill children in a state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary pediatric critical care unit as well as developing research interests and skills.

The Pediatric Critical Care Unit admits patients under 18 years of age from all medical and surgical services at Vanderbilt.  Children's Hospital is a major referral center for various pediatric subspecialties including pediatric trauma, organ transplantation, cardiothoracic surgery and burns.

Research training is an integral part of the fellowship. The 36 months of the fellowship are equally divided between clinical and research time. Laboratory experience is available in a variety of areas, including mechanisms of neuronal injury, pulmonary pathophysiology, renal physiology, and nutrition. Ongoing clinical research opportunities that complement laboratory efforts and that address critical care issues are also available for fellow participation. Selected individuals may also choose to participate in a concurrent Masters of Public Health program and Masters of Science program.
