Emergency Medicine

Emergency DepartmentWithin the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, you will find a state-of-the-art Pediatric Emergency Department. The Children’s Hospital Emergency Department provides 24 hour access to experts in pediatric care to more than 46,000 patients annually. Our Pediatric ED has 35 patient care areas and 2 trauma bays. It is staffed by attending physicians, (both Pediatric Emergency and Emergency), residents, social workers, and child life specialists. Our nurses are highly skilled in pediatrics and maintain that expertise through the population we serve. We feel an environment that specifically focuses on the emergent needs of children relieves some of the anxiety for both the parent and the child.

To better serve the needs of our population, we use the 5- Level Triage System developed by the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). This tool is used to categorize patients by acuity and resources. It is research based and has become the national standard for emergency departments. Rapid, accurate triage of patients is key to successful emergency department operations in the 21st century. This tool helps us improve the flow of patients through the ED. Patients are seen in order of the severity of their illnesses or injury.
