Our pediatric urologists care for children with any problem associated with the urinary tract and/or genitalia. The urinary tract includes the kidneys, ureter, and the bladder. Children's Hospital was recently ranked sixth best in the United States in Urology in the annual listing of America's Best Children's Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. This was the highest ranking achieved by any department at Children's Hospital.
The medical and surgical management of children with problems in these areas requires a different approach on the part of the treating physician. Managing problems ranging from complex genital and urinary tract disorders to socially debilitating voiding abnormalities requires the technical skills of a micro-surgeon with the reassuring touch of a friend and confidant. The goal of the pediatric urologists at Vanderbilt is to provide patients and families with not only a diagnosis but also an understanding of their child's problem. If necessary, we can surgically correct those problems with the skill and care necessary to obtain excellent results, while always remembering that the children under our care are not just small adults.
Our pediatric urologists have published more than 200 articles and book chapters in the field of pediatric urology. They are also internationally recognized for both their clinical and basic science research and have received numerous research awards from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society of Pediatric Urology. The division also offers an accredited two year research/clinical fellowship training program that is widely considered one of the top three programs in the country.
