Diagnostic Imaging

Diagnostic ImagingDiagnostic Imaging at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt provides comprehensive and specialized imaging services for infants and children. We offer a safe and friendly environment for all patients and their families, performing over 110,000 imaging examinations each year. Our goal is to exceed the expectations of our patients, families and referring physicians by providing excellent imaging services as well as accurate and punctual diagnostic image interpretation.

The doctors, nurses, and technologists in our department are specially educated and trained in the care of children and have had years of pediatric experience. We provide the special family-centered care that you expect from Children's Hospital in a child-friendly environment.

Diagnostic Imaging is a full service department dedicated to the care of children. Radiographs, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, CT (computed tomography or CAT scans), MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and nuclear medicine are used to produce images for diagnosis. Your doctor and the pediatric radiologists are able to determine which method or combination of methods will be most appropriate and effective in diagnosing your child's problem. We hope to make your visit to the department of diagnostic imaging as pleasant as possible.

We support the Image Gently™ Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging, dedicated to raising awareness of the opportunities to lower radiation doses in the imaging of children. Our medical director is a founding member of the Image Gently steering committee. Children's Hospital also firmly supports and practices the radiation safety principle of ALARA. ALARA is an acronym for As Low As Reasonably Achievable. ALARA means that we are committed to using the minimum amount of radiation to produce the most optimal diagnostic image for your child.
