Children's Diabetes ProgramTaking care of all kinds of diabetes requires you to have many different skills and do many different things. To help you master your diabetes, you will work with many different professionals who specialize in building these skills.

Medical Doctors
A medical doctor (MD) will coordinate your care at the Eskind Diabetes Center. The physician will make the initial diagnosis of diabetes and will determine what type of diabetes your child has. They will help you select the best treatment plan for your child's diabetes and will follow your child as he or she grows and develops to make sure their diabetes is always under the best control and receiving the most up-to-date care. Meet our physicians.

Nurse Practitioners
Our medical doctors work closely with nurse practitioners (NPs) who have specialized diabetes education to provide on-going care for diabetes.  Our NPs help provide the initial education sessions that teach you about diabetes management.  You will also visit with a NP that has been assigned to you twice yearly.  Meet our nurse practitioners

Diabetes Educators
These specialists in diabetes education assist our doctors and nurse practitioners in providing your diabetes care.  They can help you learn to check blood sugars, give injections, or get you started using an insulin pump. They will help you troubleshoot your diabetes in person in our clinic and on the phone when you call our center. Meet our diabetes nurse educators.

Registered Dietitians
Understanding what to eat and how to make your diet work with your insulin is one of the most important and challenging tasks in managing diabetes. To help you master this skill, we have a team of dietitians who will meet with you at diagnosis and follow up regularly as your child grows and develops. Meet our dietitians.

Social Worker
Having a child with diabetes can drain your physical, financial, and emotional resources. Our clinic has the support of a social worker to help you manage these special challenges. Meet our social worker.

Child Life Specialist
Giving shots and checking blood sugars can be very stressful for a child of any age.  Our child life specialist can help children make the adjustment to this new task and can help them talk about their fears and concerns. Meet our child life specialist.

YOU
Of course, YOU are the most important member of our diabetes team!  Without your dedication to your child's health, it is not possible for us to manage their diabetes.  We invite you to learn about MyHealth at Vanderbilt, an online system that allows you to view your child's personal health information, message your doctor's office, see easy-to-understand descriptions of lab tests, see upcoming appointments, view and pay your Vanderbilt bills online and more.
