Meet Our Team

The mission of the Junior League Center for Advanced Maternal-Fetal Care is to provide the most advanced diagnostic evaluation and care for mothers whose unborn baby has a congenital problem. The Center coordinates care and emotional support during the pregnancy through the delivery and into the infant period.

Our multidisciplinary Fetal Team is comprised of specialists in the following areas: Genetics, Medical Ethics, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Neonatology, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Urology, and Radiology.

Patient Care Emphasis: General and Thoracic Pediatric Surgery

Dr. Pietsch joined to faculty in Pediatric Surgery at Vanderbilt in 1986. He received his medical degree from the University Of Michigan School Of Medicine. His postgraduate training was conducted at the University of Michigan and McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He completed his fellowship training in Pediatric Surgery at the Montreal Children's Hospital. He is board certified in Pediatric Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. His clinical interests include congenital surgical conditions in the fetus and neonate, pediatric surgical oncology and ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation). His research interests include studies of ECMO and studies of nutritional support in children with cancer.

Dr. Walsh is a neonatologist specializing in the care of high risk newborn babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Monroe Carell, Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He has a highly effective approach using current clinical care management of high risk newborns including the use of state of the art medical equipment.

Dr. Walsh has been involved in pioneering the use of nitric oxide to reduce pulmonary hypertension, and the use of surfactant for respiratory therapy. He is studying the fetal repair of myelomeningocele. He is evaluating pulse oximetry as a screening tool to detect congenital heart disease in Tennessee. Dr. Walsh was involved in the initial studies demonstrating the effectiveness of cooling to ameliorate brain injury, and is doing further research on cooling the premature infant and the baby on extra corporal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). He is involved in coordinating a study with the Vanderbilt obstetricians and home nursing staff to prevent recurrent preterm births.

Dr. Walsh joined the Vanderbilt faculty following his retirement as Lt. Colonel, and senior neonatologist in the United States Air Force in 1992. He received his undergraduate life science degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, CO, and his medical degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio. His advanced training including internship, residency and fellowship in neonatology was at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center Lackland AFB, in Texas. He is certified in The American Board of Pediatrics and it Sub-Board of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.

Patient Care Emphasis: Critically Ill Newborns, Clinical Ethics, NICU Follow-up, Palliative Care
Dr. Carter has been in the Division of Neonatology since 1999, and previously served as a pediatrician/neonatologist in the US Army. He has served on the faculty of 4 medical schools (University of Colorado, Denver), Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (Bethesda, MD), Medical College of Georgia (Augusta) and Vanderbilt. Dr. Carter counsels families with expected high-risk newborns in the Center for Advanced Maternal-Fetal Care, attends deliveries of such patients, manages critically ill newborns in the Neonatal ICU at Children's Hospital - working with Cardiologists, Surgeons, and other specialists, and sees some children back in the NICU Follow-Up Clinic. He presently co-directs the pediatric palliative care efforts (PACT; Pediatric Advanced Comfort Team) at Vanderbilt, writes, speaks, and teaches nationally in the field. He has training in clinical ethics, and works with both families and staff in addressing difficult decision-making.

Patient Care Emphasis: Newborn Diseases  
Dr. Cotton is Professor of Pediatrics and was the Director of the Division of Neonatology from 1989 to 2003. He has been a faculty member since completing his fellowship at Vanderbilt in 1975. His research interests have included the pathophysiology of hyaline membrane disease and the management of symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus. His current research focus is on the role of oxidant injury in the pathogenesis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

Patient Care Emphasis: Critically Ill Neonates
A graduate of Heidelberg Medical School in Germany, Dr. Engelhardt came to Vanderbilt at the end of her pediatric residency at Marburg University in 1983. She was a Fellow in Neonatology with special focus on GBS and BPD. For eight years she served as Chief of Nursery and Assistant Chief of Pediatrics at Nashville General Hospital, where she became interested in perinatal substance exposure. Her research interests are chronic lung disease and perinatal substance exposure.

Patient Care Emphasis: Neonatology
Dr. Sundell has been with the division since 1970. His main research interests include newborn lung disease and respiratory control with emphasis on the influence of perinatal nicotine exposure. Another interest is the pathophysiologic effects of Group B Streptococcal toxin.

Dr. Boehm is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Vice Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN. He is the former Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Vanderbilt Medical Center as well as the former Chair of the Vanderbilt Medical Center's Ethics Committee. Dr. Boehm is a graduate of Vanderbilt Medical School and the Yale Internship and Residency Program. He is Board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal Fetal Medicine and has authored over 200 scientific publications as well as co-editing a major medical textbook.

During his time at Vanderbilt, Dr. Boehm has overseen or been involved in fetal monitoring research, the fetal surgery program, bringing ultrasound to the bedside of obstetric patients and the Perinatal Regional Intervention Program. His patient care emphasis is High-Risk Obstetrics. He is also interested in Chorionic Villus Sampling, and developments in fetal monitoring. Dr. Boehm has authored Doctor's Cry, Too: Essays from the Heart of a Physician and Building Patient Doctor Trust which addresses the issue of physician-patient communication and the need for doctors to build trusting relationships with their patients.

Dr. Carpenter's clinical and research interests include fetal ultrasound and prenatal diagnosis, fetal growth restriction, immunology in pregnancy, and placental function. She received her undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University and her medical degree from the University of Tennessee. She completed her residency and a Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine where she also was a Women's Reproductive Health Research Scholar. Dr. Carpenter shares her knowledge of high risk pregnancy by active involvement in medical student and resident education.

Martha has over 10 years of experience providing prenatal genetic counseling regarding family history concerns, abnormal ultrasound findings, maternal serum screening results, prenatal testing for genetic diseases, abnormal prenatal chromosome results, infertility, and pregnancy loss.

Martha completed her bachelor's degree at Washington University in St. Louis and her master's degree in Genetic Counseling at the University of Cincinnati. In addition to her faculty appointment in the Department of Ob/Gyn, she holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Pediatrics, where she has provided genetic counseling in pediatrics, prenatal and adult genetics in the Medical Genetics Clinic at Children's Hospital. Martha is board certified in genetic counseling and coordinates the Reproductive Genetics Program at Vanderbilt. She has participated in the Center for Advanced Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Children's Hospital since its inception.

Medical Ethics

The Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society

Dr. Bliton is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, with secondary appointments in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Department of Philosophy at Vanderbilt University. He serves as the Chief of the Clinical Ethics Consultation Service at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is also the Area Director for Medical Humanities in the Emphasis Program at Vanderbilt's School of Medicine. Within the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society, Bliton is the primary supervisor for students from all disciplines interested in pursuing clinical ethics experiences.

Integral to his clinical focus, Bliton is interested in the details and moral experiences associated with clinical interactions and decision-making. His work examines the ethics associated with innovative maternal-fetal therapies and the complexity of moral experience in the neonatal intensive care setting. Another area of inquiry regards the phenomenon of "self" and moral experience.

Pediatric Cardiology

Dr. Kavanaugh-McHugh is a cardiologist specializing in the prenatal diagnosis of fetal cardiac defects. Fetal cardiac diagnosis includes family counseling regarding the fetal heart disease and its prognosis, as well as planning for the care of fetuses before birth, at the time of delivery, and after birth. Her staff includes nurses and social workers involved in the care of children with heart disease prenatally and postnatally. Dr. Kavanaugh-McHugh received her bachelor's degree at Yale University and attended medical school at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She also completed her residency and cardiology fellowship at Johns Hopkins. She is board certified in Pediatric Cardiology.

Dr. Parra is a pediatric cardiologist specializing in non invasive imaging. He received his medical degree from the Universidad Central del Ecuador in Quito. He completed his residency in Pediatrics at Miami Children's Hospital and a fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He also has additional training in cardiac MRI from Boston Children's Hospital. He specializes in fetal echocardiography, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography and cardiac MRI.  
 
Pediatric Neurosurgery

Dr. Noel Tulipan is Professor of Neurological Surgery. His clinical interests include all aspects of pediatric neurosurgery, with special emphasis on congenital defects of the nervous system, hydrocephalus, craniofacial reconstruction, and surgery for spasticity. Dr. Tulipan received his medical degree and completed his internship training in Surgery from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. He continued his residency training in Neurosurgery at that institution between 1981 and 1986. He became a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons in 1989. Dr. Tulipan is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the Society for Neuroscience. His professional organizational responsibilities include membership on the Pediatric Neurological Surgery Section of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. His research interests include:
  • Application of endoscopic surgery to the in utero repair of congenital neurologic defects
  • Prevention of infection in ventriculoperitoneal shunt patients
  • Effect of amniotic fluid on fetal spinal cord in vitro

Dr. Brock is the Surgeon-in-Chief of Children's Hospital. He joined the faculty 1983 and is Professor of Urologic Surgery and Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University. In 1992 he became the Director of the Division of Pediatric Urology. He was named Surgeon-in-Chief of Children's Hospital in 2002. Dr. Brock received his Bachelor of Science in History from Vanderbilt University in 1974 and his medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia in 1978. From 1979 to 1982 he was a resident in Urology at Vanderbilt University and served as Chief Resident in 1982-1983. He was Board Certified by the American Board of Urology in 1985. Dr Brock was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society Faculty in 1992. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Society of Pediatric Urologists. He is president-elect of the Society of Pediatric Urologists and coordinator of Society's research grant committee, and is a member of the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons and the American Medical Association. He is active in the American Urological Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the South Eastern Section of the American Urological Association serving as presenter and moderator. His presentations have won several awards. Dr. Brock is on the Editorial Board of International Pediatric Surgery, the Editorial Board of the Pediatric Urology Section of the Journal of Urology, and the Executive Committee of the Journal of Pediatric Urology.

Dr. Pope received his BA in Chemistry and Biology from Wake Forrest University in 1985 where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He received his medical degree with highest honors from the University of Tennessee in Memphis in 1989. In 1990 Dr. Pope completed his internship and from 1990 to 1994 he was a resident in Urology at Vanderbilt University; from 1994 - 1995 he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Pope completed his Fellowship in Pediatric Urology at the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha in 1988 Dr. Pope is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a Fellow of the Society of Pediatric Urologists and a Fellow of the Society of Pediatric Urology. He is the coordinator of the research grant committee for the Society of Pediatric Urology. He is active in the American Urological Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the South Eastern Section of the American Urological Association serving as presenter and moderator. Dr. Pope has received numerous grant awards. He is a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, 1990 and Diplomate of the American Board of Urology, 1999.

Dr. Thomas is an Ohio native who grew up in Cleveland. He received his Bachelor's degree in Biology from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. He earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1998. Dr. Thomas spent the next six years in Urology training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, OH. He recently completed his two-year Pediatric Urology Fellowship here at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. Dr.Thomas is board certified by the American Board of Urology and remains active in the American Urological Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the South Eastern Section of the American Urological Association serving as presenter.

Dr. Kelly trained in plastic, craniofacial, and microvascular surgery at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland and the Emergency Medical Service at the Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services. Prior to that time Dr. Kelly also trained in oral and maxillofacial surgery and general surgery. Dr. Kelly provides screening for cleft lip, cleft palate, and other cranial deformations to CAMFC patients.

Kevin has over fourteen years experience in ultrasound specializing in Maternal Fetal Medicine Ob/Gyn. He received a Bachelor of Science from Florida State University in 1988, and a Certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and Associates Degree of Science in Radiologic Technology from Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, FL in 1992. Kevin is registered in Ob/Gyn, Abdomen, and Pediatric Neurosonology, and certified in First Trimester Nuchal Translucency Screening.

Tracy has over five years experience serving Vanderbilt Medical Center. She received an Associates Degree in Applied Sciences and a Certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography from Pensacola Junior College, Pensacola, FL in 2002. Tracy has over six years experience in ultrasound specializing in Maternal Fetal Medicine Ob/Gyn, and is a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. She is currently working towards certification in Nuchal Translucency Screening.

Involved with Vanderbilt University in some capacity for most of her life, Jennifer feels especially privileged to be an employee here since September, 2007. A native of Nashville, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in Health from Belmont University in 1993, and certification in Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound from New York University in 1996. Jennifer has thirteen years of experience in ultrasound specializing in Maternal Fetal Medicine. She is also a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. Jennifer is currently working towards her certification in Nuchal Translucency Screening.

Ms. Reilly graduated from Nashville State Technical Institute, Nashville, in 1978 with an Associate's Degree in Medical Secretarial Science. She has over 11 years of experience in working with women in high risk pregnancies. She joined the CAMFC in February 2007 from the Vanderbilt Dept of Ob/Gyn where she was the administrative assistant to the Head of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Ms. Reilly compiles a weekly report based on records, observations, and test results for a fetal team meeting held every Thursday afternoon. This clinical information is stored in a computerized database that she helps to maintain for future analysis of results.

Laurie V. SoileauLaurie V. Soileau
Program Coordinator
Ms. Soileau serves as the Program Coordinator for the Junior League of Nashville Center for Advanced Maternal Fetal Care. She acts as liaison for the JLCAMFC team and patients, volunteer supervisor, and facilitates special projects including database, marketing and outreach efforts. She received a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics from the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, AL, and Teacher Certification for English as a Second Language from the Tennessee Foreign Language Institute in Nashville, TN. She also completed two years of  French language studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Prior to joining Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, Ms. Soileau developed and coordinated a social services program for local refugee seniors which, in part, involved improving their access to health care. She is very interested in healthcare access for minority and disenfranchised populations.

Nancy TownsendNancy S. Townsend, R.N., M.S.N.
Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist

Ms. Townsend is the Maternal-Fetal Medicine nurse at the Center for Advanced Maternal Fetal Care, having joined the team in July, 2008. She has over 22 years experience as a nurse, mostly focused on the care of childbearing families. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from DePauw University, and completed a Masters of Science in Nursing at Vanderbilt University. Nancy currently serves on the Review Panel for the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing, having served a past term on the Editorial Advisory Board. She has a particular interest in providing and coordinating the care of families experiencing high risk pregnancies.
