Barbara Walczyk-Joers, MHSA, CHE

Chief Operating Officer

Barbara JoersBarbara Walczyk-Joers joined Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2000 as the Director for Transformation Management focusing on large scale operational changes. In the fall of 2002 Barbara was selected to serve on the first administrative team of the new free-standing children's hospital on campus and led the 2004 operational transition into the new facility.  Based on her contributions to Children's,  Barbara's portfolio has grown and includes strategic and operational accountability for:
  • Quality and Safety which includes Performance Management and Improvement,  Transformation Management and Innovation,  Infection Control*, Standards and Accreditation*, Environmental Health and Safety, and Disaster Preparedness*
  • Patient Access and Throughput which includes Admitting and Access Center, Registration Services, Case Management, Utilization Management, Telephone Triage and Medical Records*
  • Clinical Ancillaries which includes Diagnostic Imaging, Pharmacy, Laboratory Services*,  Rehabilitative Services, and Clinical Dieticians*
  • Family Services which includes Social Work, Pastoral Services, Palliative Care, Child Life, Family Resource Center, Patient Affairs*, Guest Services, Interpreter Services
  • General Operations which includes Environmental Services, Space*, Plant and Facility*, Security*, and Parking*

Barbara has been a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives since 1992, the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions since 2002 and other organizations dedicated to quality and safety of adult and children’s healthcare.  She currently sits on Nashville Ronald McDonald House Board of Advisors and the Board of Directors for the Autism Society of Middle Tennessee.  A native of New York State, Barbara spent her early career in Washington, D.C. with an academic medical center and a national professional services firm. Moving to the Philadelphia area, Barbara continued traveling as a national consultant within a large community hospital system before settling in Nashville.  Barbara holds a Bachelor in Business Administration concentrated in Hospital Administration from Marymount University and a Master of Health Services Administration dedicated in Health Services Management and Policy from George Washington University.
