Vanderbilt Children's Health Improvement and Prevention (VCHIP)
Vanderbilt Children's Health Improvement and Prevention (VCHIP) is an initiative of Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt to improve the lives of children through outreach, education, treatment, intervention and prevention programs. This department brings programs beyond the hospital walls and into the community with the help of our volunteers. We focus on educating children and parents to ensure that all children have a positive start in life, are cared for and safe, practice healthy behavior, and make successful transitions to adulthood. The department targets the leading health issues affecting children today—obesity, early childhood development, school health and safety.

Three Primary Advocacy and Outreach Areas

Healthy Children

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has documented that certain behaviors often adopted during childhood are contributing to today's major causes of death for adults such as heart disease, cancer and injuries.  Therefore, our Healthy Children initiatives are designed to promote healthy behaviors in today's children to better prepare them to become healthy and productive adults. Visit this section of the site to learn more about the following programs targeted to keeping our children healthy.

Safe Children

Injury is the leading cause of death and disability in the United States for children. Every day more than 39,000 children end up in a hospital emergency room or physician's office due to injuries. However, most injuries can be prevented through education. Visit this section of the site to learn more about the following programs targeted to keeping our children safe.

Informed Families

At the center of everything we do is our commitment to building families that are equipped with the tools they need to be successful. Visit this section of the site to learn more about the following programs targeted to inform families.

  • Back to Basics: Provides health information on a variety of topics found throughout community health clinics and pediatrician practices
  • Healthy Kids 2025: Employer initiative to address health awareness of children
  • Community Events: Find out what is happening in the community!

Vanderbilt Children's Health Improvement and Prevention (VCHIP) department works very hard at producing success within a variety of programs and initiatives that all aim to improve the health, safety, and well-being of today's children.  We also recognize that we would not achieve such successes without the collaboration and participation of numerous individuals and organizations.  Visit Reaching and Achieving Success to learn more about past projects and programs accomplished by VCHIP and the partners and donors that make these successes possible!
