The Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt's STriVe program offers a unique service learning opportunity for teen volunteers. The program fosters a commitment to volunteering, offers valuable insight into a variety of healthcare professions, and gives the opportunity to work in multiple areas of the hospital with patients, siblings, and family members. Additionally, this experience cultivates a sense of leadership, initiative taking, and confidence in the participants. The teen volunteers, coined VolunTeens, work with mentors to plan, implement, and evaluate age appropriate activities for patients and siblings in pediatric playrooms and waiting rooms. The VolunTeens assist with toy cleaning, circulation of the book cart and comfort cart, and science experiments with patients.
A typical day in the life of a STriVe VolunTeen includes meeting with the interns, participating in team building activities with fellow peers, volunteering with patients and families in a variety of areas, listening to a noon educational session, and working on a collaborative project.
