·         Serve on Hospital Morbidity, Mortality & Improvement Task Force & direct NICU M&M Conferences

·         Direct NICU Pain Assessment & Management Team

o        Present grant support by the Mayday Fund (2005-06) to investigate the utility of a quality improvement model using an interdisciplinary team to improve pain assessment & management in the NICU

o        Parent & staff surveys

o        Mentor one fellow (B. Cofer, MD) in this capacity

·         Co-Direct Pediatric Advance Comfort Team at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital

§         Serve on fellow academic advisory board for S. Alisanski, MD (Peds Oncology)

o        Research: Preparing manuscript on use of M&M Conference to impact palliative care education & track progress (study completed in late 2004 with former fellow S. Guthrie, MD)

o        Institutional Representative for Vanderbilt

o        Judge for Young Investigator Award (2005)

o        Lead Reviewer & Moderator for Health Care Research program (2006)

·         Clinical Service: Attend in NICU; Consults for Prenatal Diagnoses; F/U Clinic ½ day week when not on service

·         Academic Service & Advocacy: VUMC Ethics Committee; TN Folic Acid Council (March of Dimes & State Dept. of Health); TN Early Hearing Detection & Intervention Task Force

·         Editorial Service

o        Editor, Neonatology Section, Pediatric Textbook, eMedicine.com

o        Editorial Board, AAP PREP Self Assessment, Neonatology topics

§         Write test questions & critiques for 16 Am Board Pediatrics content specifications annually (2003-present, term expires in 2009)

§         Contribute to editing & critiques of ~120 questions/yr across pediatric topics

 

 

PROPOSED/PROJECTED FUTURE RESEARCH/ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES:

·         Palliative Care

o        Conduct 2nd chart audit/evaluate impact of pediatric palliative education on inpatient care over the last 5 yrs at VCH (1st study published in Pediatrics 2004)

o        Investigate role of spirituality in family/parent decision-making for children at the end of life (protocol under revision with M. Cortez, MD after 1st IRB review)

·         Clinical Neonatology

o        Study sound in NICU environment: old NICU vs new NICU, and HFJV device

§         Happy to do with fellow, also have Audiology PhD candidate interested

o        Wyeth sponsored study on GE reflux study

·         Perinatal Ethics

o        Look at parental information & prenatal diagnoses/outcomes in Center for Advanced Maternal-Fetal Care
