The physicians and advanced practice nurses in the Division of Critical Care Medicine provide sedation to children of all ages undergoing painful as well as non-painful procedures. Our team's goal is to help relieve anxiety in the child as well as the parents. This increases the likelihood of successful procedures.
We use a variety of effective and safe sedation techniques tailored to the specific needs of each child and the planned procedure. The sedation team works closely with the specialists from Child Life Services, who provide non drug-related methods of diminishing anxiety, and the team performing the procedure to diminish and, if possible, eliminate any anxiety or pain.
The team, led by an attending ICU physician, provides effective, short-acting drugs through oral, nasal or intravenous route and monitors the sedated child with state-of-the-art monitors. The sedation team currently provides services to children undergoing procedures in the Oncology clinic, Radiology department, and inpatient floors.
