The Division of Medical Genetics and Genomic Medicine at Children’s Hospital provides evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and genetic counseling for familial disorders, birth defects, chromosomal disorders, or concerns about personal or family medical histories.

Our services include specialty areas, such as clinical, biochemical, and molecular genetics (metabolic and fconnective tissue disorders, for example). Our specialists also have expertise in adult onset disorders like certain types of cancer, Huntington disease, hypertension and pulmonary fibrosis.

We are equipped and staffed to conduct tests for a broad range of genetic disorders.  Using biochemical, chromosomal, and molecular (DNA) techniques, these tests include newborn screening and diagnostic, presymptomatic, susceptibility and carrier testing for individuals of all ages.

Our experienced clinical personnel serve as diplomats of the American Board of Medical Genetics or the American Board of Genetic Counselors. They are board certified in Clinical Genetics, Clinical Biochemical Genetics, Clinical Molecular Genetics, Clinical Molecular Genetics, Clinical Cytogenetics or Genetic Counseling.

Clinical Services

• We have a general medical genetics clinic on Mondays and Tuesdays for patients with birth defects, inborn errors of metabolism, connective tissue disease, developmental delay, and other genetic syndromes.
• Returning patients with metabolic diseases of PKU, biotinidase or galactosemia can be seen by our Certified Nurse Practicioner on Mondays (AM), Tuesdays (PM), Wednesdays (PM) and Thursdays (PM).
• Genetic counseling is provided by Board Certified Genetic Counselors in the Medical Genetics clinic, Prenatal clinic, Hemophilia clinic, Down syndrome clinic, Huntington disease clinic and Cancer clinic.
• We have genetics outreach clinics in Cookeville one Monday a month.
