Pediatric Brain Tumor Program
Brain tumor patientBrain and spinal cord tumors affect nearly 2,000 children in the U.S. every year. They can occur in children at any age but are most often diagnosed at 10 years of age or younger. The Pediatric Brain Tumor Program at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt is designed for young patients and their families.

The exact causes of brain and spinal cord tumors are largely unknown.  Once a tumor has been found, the team of physicians, nurses and other specialists working with your child will decide on a treatment plan and follow him or her throughout the course of this plan.

Children’s Hospital is the most comprehensive children’s hospital in the state. Our Childhood Cancer Program is a place to hope and a place to heal for pediatric cancer patients and their families. We deliver state-of-the-art care in a nurturing, family-centered environment.

The overall goal is for your child to receive care that will help him or her get back to a normal pattern of life as soon as possible. We continue to provide support including follow up visits with our team. Our hope is to prevent the return of the tumor and minimize the complications resulting from the tumor and treatment.

Treatment programs and research in novel approaches are based on collaboration within the comprehensive multidisciplinary environment at Vanderbilt, collaboration with the Brain Tumor Program of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, and collaboration with other institutions regionally and nationally.

John F. Kuttesch, Jr., PhD, MD is the director of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program.

Julie Isbell, RN, BSN, CPON is the nurse coordinator.
