Anesthesiology

A pediatric anesthesiologist is a doctor who specializes in taking care of children during surgery and other medical procedures. Our pediatric anesthesiologists take care of children of all ages from newborn to teenagers and are experienced in the special needs of children of different ages and their families. Our goal is to make the hospital experience as pleasant as possible and to help manage your child's anxiety before surgery and pain after surgery.

Many different types of procedures require your child to stay still or may cause them discomfort if no anesthesia is used. An anesthesiologist can combine the right types of medicine to make sure your child is comfortable during the procedure. They may or may not need to be all the way "asleep" for some procedures done outside the operating room. Your child will need to be asleep for most surgery done in the operating room. A pediatric anesthesiologist can evaluate your child and make the best decision for their care.

AnesthesiologyPediatric anesthesiologists do not just work in the operating room. They may be involved in sedating or anesthetizing your child for many different procedures outside of the OR. Many children can't lie still or cooperate enough to have a CT Scan or MRI. Bone marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures are procedures that young cancer patients may experience. The right kind of anesthesia can make these procedures much easier. Our pediatric anesthesiologists may also be involved with helping preparing your child for surgery if they have complex medical problems.  Learn more about the services we offer below:

General Pediatric Anesthesia
In addition to sedation, an important job of the anesthesia team is to provide continuous monitoring of the patient's vital functions, medical conditions, and level of consciousness during surgery. Our anesthesia team will be in the operating room with the patient during the entire surgery. Learn more about general pediatric anesthesia and meet our team.

Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia
This team provides anesthesia to children undergoing full heart surgery, cardiac catheterization procedures and imaging studies that doctors use to diagnose disease. The pediatric cardiac anesthesia team is staffed by a group of specially trained doctors who know how a child with heart disease may react to anesthesia. The pediatric anesthesiologists with the pain service are experienced in different techniques and therapies to best manage your child's pain. Learn more about the pain service and meet our team.

PATCH Clinic
Preoperative Assessment and Teaching for Children's Hospital, or PATCH Clinic, offers you and your child the opportunity to be prepared for your surgical experience. You may schedule a PATCH visit to the hospital for this preparation. During your PATCH visit, a Child Life Specialist will help you and your child or teen learn about their surgery in the way children learn best - through their senses.
